I believe that no human being has the right to control what any other human being does. All people are free to do what they wish provided that causes no harm to anyone else. The problem arises when one or more people enter into an activity which does or is perceived to cause harm to, or is detrimental to another person, or group of people. For this reason and only for this reason should any person or group of people be given any power to regulate what another human being or group of people does.
Already the vast majority of people behave responsibly and with consideration towards other people without the need for a moral policeman standing behind them. This is because of the education they have received in the family and school. Without this rearing society simply could not function at all. Police and the courts are only needed on those rare occasions when someone transgresses the fundamental law: "do no harm to any other". I know that crime and illegal action occur every day, but if crime rates are calculated in terms of population rather than per year, then crime is, in fact, a very rare thing.
Due to the fact that the human race is not sufficiently evolved to rely on education alone for the smooth running of society, some organisation is necessary to protect the good from the disturbed. It is at this point that democracy comes in. Any grouping of people can choose its representatives as it wishes. The groupings may be as small as a single street or village, or as big as what is currently called a nation. At all times the people in the group are sovereign. It is up to the group itself to decide how big it is to be, provided that those people at the edges of the group join it voluntarily. To arbitrate any difference among or between groups a Continental Court (not a government) consisting of proffessionally trained arbiters should be elected on the basis of one person one vote by the people of the continent.
The human race is not mature enough, however, at the moment to manage this form of free rule effectively, if at all. So at the moment I support the SNP in their struggle for a free and independent Scotland.
Some of my philosophy no doubt is evident from the above article. I hold a mixture of socialist and christian principles. I no longer believe in the christian idea of a heaven and a hell, with a vicarious saviour, who rescues us from inevitable damnation. I believe in a universal creating divinity, who only loves absolutely, and for whom damnation of its creatures is an anathema.
I believe that as spiritual beings we choose to become incarnate in these material bodies to learn the lessons of experience, which only life in a physical body can give us.
